At Ethos College, we are committed to supporting our pupils through a trauma-informed approach called PACE, developed by Dr. Dan Hughes. PACE stands for Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy—the key principles that guide how our staff build trusting, caring relationships with every pupil.
Playfulness:
We believe that engaging with pupils in a playful and positive manner helps create a warm and welcoming environment. By incorporating shared activities, games, or a light-hearted tone, our staff reduce tension and help pupils feel at ease, fostering a positive connection.
Acceptance:
We demonstrate unconditional acceptance and understanding, making sure pupils feel valued and validated. Recognising and respecting their feelings and experiences, even when they are difficult, helps build a foundation of trust and safety.
Curiosity:
Our staff team approaches each pupil with genuine interest and openness. We listen without judgment and seek to understand their unique experiences and emotions, encouraging trust and deeper connection without asking “why” questions that can feel intrusive.
Empathy:
We prioritise emotional support by understanding and sharing pupils’ feelings and perspectives. Showing empathy helps pupils feel safe, understood, and connected, promoting resilience and well-being.
By integrating the PACE approach into our daily interactions, Ethos College creates a nurturing environment where pupils feel supported, understood, and empowered to thrive.
