Nurture

What is Nurture?

The concept of nurture highlights the importance of social environments and its significant influence on social-emotional skills, wellbeing and behaviour. Our nurturing approach offers a range of opportunities for young people to engage with missing early nurturing experiences, giving them the social and emotional skills to do well at school and with their peers, and develop resilience and their capacity to deal more confidently with trials and tribulations of life, for life.

  • The Six Principles of Nurture  +

Everything we do is based on and guided by the six principles of nurture learning. We focus on emotional needs and development as well as the academic learning of all pupils and embed the six principles of nurture throughout the policies and practices at Ethos College.

    1. Children’s Learning is understood developmentally

    At Ethos College this means:

“We learn at our own pace”.

    2. The classroom offers a safe base

    At Ethos College this means:

“Our safe space is our group room”.

    3. We understand the importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing.

    At Ethos College this means:

“Our Nurturing school helps us to feel safe and happy”.

    4. We understand that language is a vital form of communication.

    At Ethos College this means:

“Everything we say is important and we like to be listened to”.

    5. All behaviour is communication

    At Ethos College this means:

“Sometimes we need help to understand how we feel and act”.

    6. Transition is important in children’s lives

    At Ethos College this means:

“Everyone experiences changes, and it is important to share worries so that staff can help us through transitions”.
